The Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Company of Chicago was founded in 1960 by Roland Bailey, Robert Ashenhurst, and Nancy Lorie. We have been delighting audiences since our first production, The Gondoliers, in 1960 at the University of Chicago’s Mandel Hall. As the oldest theatrical company in the Chicago area dedicated solely to producing Gilbert and Sullivan’s complete works, our company has staged more than 65 productions.

A BRIEF HISTORY

1960

When The Gondoliers opened at the University of Chicago’s Mandel Hall on November 18, 1960, Roland Bailey, Robert Ashenhurst, and Nancy Lorie unknowingly started a Hyde Park tradition that would delight audiences for sixty years.

1964

The incorporation of the Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Company, Inc. formalized the group's commitment to producing and preserving Gilbert & Sullivan’s works, establishing it as a key cultural institution in Hyde Park.

1979

Beginning in 1979, the Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Company performed at the Beverly Arts Center for sixteen years as part of its Bravo!! series. They typically offered a matinee and a Saturday night performance, starting with The Mikado in 1979. 

1984

Princess Ida began the University of Chicago’s Department of Music sponsoring of The Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Company. This 15-year partnership, featuring weekend performances in Hutchinson Court, significantly benefited the University’s performance programs. The University’s support continues to be crucial to the company’s success and community engagement.

1993

In 1984, the Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Company celebrated the 100th anniversary of Utopia (Limited) with a special revival. This production honored Gilbert and Sullivan's satire of political and social institutions, delighting audiences and reaffirming their enduring legacy.

2010

The Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Company proudly marked 50 years of The Mikado. This milestone celebrated the enduring charm and popularity of this operatic classic, bringing together fans and performers to honor its rich history.
