Patience

In Patience; Or, Bunthorne’s Bride, twenty lovesick maidens abandon their military admirers for the aesthetic poet Bunthorne, who only has eyes for Patience, the milkmaid. Patience, who has never felt unselfish love, falls for Bunthorne's rival, Archibald Grosvenor, but fears she can't love him selflessly because of his perfection. Bunthorne, feeling rejected, offers himself up in a raffle, but Patience decides she must love Bunthorne to be unselfish. The maidens then turn their affections to Grosvenor. In the second act, Grosvenor pines for Patience while the maidens adore him, but Bunthorne threatens to curse him unless he becomes less attractive. Grosvenor complies and becomes commonplace, leading the maidens to follow suit. Patience, seeing Grosvenor no longer perfect, leaves Bunthorne, who is left alone with his flowers, as no one will be his bride.
