Arguably the most popular of the Gilbert and Sullivan repertoire in America, The Pirates of Penzance is known for its witty libretto and memorable music. Set on the rocky coast of Cornwall, the story follows Frederic, a young man mistakenly apprenticed to a band of tender-hearted pirates. On the day he turns 21 and believes his service is complete, Frederic falls in love with Mabel, the daughter of the Major-General. However, a twist of fate reveals that, having been born on a leap year, Frederic technically has many years left in his apprenticeship. Bound by duty to return to the pirates, Frederic finds himself caught in a whirlwind of bumbling constables, noble daughters, and paradoxical logic. Packed with satire, clever wordplay, and rousing choruses, The Pirates of Penzance remains a beloved classic of the operetta stage.

The Company’s 2025 production of Pirates was particularly special to its directorial team, who brought a well-crafted and complete show honed over thirty years and fifteen separate productions—including the 1980s Broadway and National Tour productions, as well as productions designed from W.S. Gilbert’s original prompt books. This production was an unforgettable event for performers and audience members of all experience levels—from Savoyard aficionados to light opera novices—and stood as a true testament to the enduring power and beauty of Gilbert and Sullivan for generations to come.
